The first quarter (1Q) of 2012 marked the 10th consecutive quarter of revenue growth of worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage, according to research from Gartner. The increase amounted to a total of $5.4 billion, an 8% increase from the $5 billion of 1Q 2011.

"Block-access host interface notably associated with SAN infrastructures came in at 4% year-over-year growth in vendor revenue against a forecast of 5.2%, while file-access beat the Gartner forecast with 22.9% year-over-year growth, four percentage points higher than Gartner's forecast," said research VP at Gartner Roger Cox.

According to the report, hard disk drive pricing remained above pre Thailand flood levels on a per TB basis, while EMC's market share increased 2.4% in Q1, with 21.9% of its total ECB storage revenue coming from recent acquisitions (Data Domain, Avamar and Isilon).
