Hitachi Data Systems opens Asia Pacific Distribution Center in Singapore

By Victor Ng | Jun 2, 2010

To serve regional customers better, Hitachi Data Systems' new state-of-the-art Asia Pacific Distribution Center represents an investment of more than US$3 million.

Incorporating the best of Hitachi Data Systems storage technology, the distribution center will house a complete range of products including Hitachi Universal Storage Platform V & VM and Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage 2000 series.

Located in Singapore’s Airport Logistics Park (ALPS) strategically located within Singapore’s Free Trade Zone next to Changi International Airport, the new facility is spread out over an area of 35,746 square feet on a 5-year lease and will begin operations with immediate effect.

In Asia Pacific (excluding Japan), the company makes an average of 150 shipments a day, each order ranging from US$10,000 to US$1 million worth of storage-related hardware and software. Shipment orders average US$20 million to $30 million a month.

Closer to the customer base
In the past, customer orders were assembled, configured and distributed out of the Indianapolis Distribution Center and delivered by air transport to Japan before being shipped out to customers in Asia Pacific.

Being Hitachi Data Systems’ first distribution center outside the US and Europe, the Asia Pacific Distribution Center will streamline operations and reduce transportation, warehousing costs by virtue of being closer to customer locations and Hitachi Japan, the product supplier.

The reduction in transportation time will also ensure timely configuration of Hitachi Data Storage products to specific customer requirements.

"Asia Pacific is the fastest growing region in the world," said Kevin Eggleston, senior vice-president and general manager of Hitachi Data Systems Asia Pacific. "Our customer footprint in this region has grown rapidly and there has also been an increase in customer service level requirements.

"To support our company’s growth and to serve our customers even better, we decided to launch the Asia Pacific Distribution Center. Our Distribution Centers’ (DCs) serve as critical links in the value chain of Hitachi Data Systems and they contribute phenomenally in increasing our value-proposition to our customers. We perfect our offerings at the DCs to ensure that we not only meet the needs of our customers but exceed them."

Over the next couple of years, provisions are made for the Distribution Center to continue to grow, as well as for increasing the range of technology assembled and improving customer satisfaction levels. In July 2010, the Distribution Center is expected to expand by another 30% of floor space.

"We've had to deal with more data in the last decade than in the preceding century," said Eggleston. "Mobility, convergence and virtualization are some of the technologies that are leading the social revolution today, with data changing the way we live and work."
